Pi Day

Pi-pie10

March 14th (3/14) is Pi Day.  Represented by the sixteenth letter of the Greek alphabet (π); Pi is the ratio between a circle’s circumference and diameter,  a mathematical constant approximately equal to 3.1459.

Although 39 decimal places is sufficiently accurate to calculate the spherical volume of the entire universe, Pi has been calculated to over a trillion digits. With no repeating pattern and therefore infinite complexity every number combination exists within Pi.

Martin Krzywinski gives an insight into the scale and beauty of Pi by using colour-coded digits. Each digit, 0-9 of Pi is designated a colour and plotted on an Archimedean spiral.
